1. Rotating Tires: It is recommended that you rotate your tires every other oil change or no more than 10,000 miles. Rotating your tires will extend the life of your tires.
2. Tire Balancing: Balancing tires should be done if you are feeling vibration while driving your car. If a wheel weight falls off in between tire balancing, you could discover a vibration while driving. For best tire wear have your tires balanced at least once a year.
3. Alignment: The quickest way to ruin a new set of tires is to not have your alignment checked. If your car is just a little out of alignment, you could wear down your tires side walls very quickly shorting the life of your new tires.
4. Flat Tire Repair: The best way to repair a tire when it has been punctured by a road hazard is to have your tire removed from the rim and the tire patched from the inside. Plugging a tire is more of a temporary fix it will get you by but it may not last.
5. Tire Damage: If you get a nail with in one inch of the sidewall it is not repairable, the tire should be replaced. Again it may be able to be plugged as a temporary fix, but should be replaced soon.
6. Tire Age: Tires do not last forever, your tires will start to dry crack on the sides the older they get. Dry cracking tires can cause a blowout. Replace your tires at least every 8 to 10 years.
7. Right Tires: Having the wrong tires on your car or SUV can be dangerous make sure when purchasing your next set of tires that they are the proper tire for your vehicle.
8. Spare Tire: When was the last time your checked the air in your spare tire? Did you buy your car used? Does it even have a spare tire? You should check your spare after buying a used car to make sure it is the right tire for the car. You should check your spare tire air at least once a year. Knowing where your spare is and how to change it is very valuable to know for when you have a roadside emergency.
9. Tire Tread: Your tires have a tread bar on them if you wear your tires to the tread bar you should replace them. Most tires start with 10/32 of tread and you are legally below specs at 2/32 tread depth. Driving on bald tires can cause hydroplaning in the rain and slipping or loss of traction in the snow.
10. Tire Side wall damage: If you see any cuts, slices or bubbles on the sidewalls of your tires it is time to replace your tires. A bubble on the side wall is a sure sign of tire failure. Perform a visual inspection of your tires at least once a month.
